Officiating Pathway

Learn about Officiating

Officiating pickleball is fun and one of the most rewarding things you can do. As a referee or line judge, you get a front-row seat to the great action.

To become involved, have a look at the Canadian Officiating Program.

Pickleball Rules

To be a competent referee or line judge you need to know the rules.

Learn the best practices of a referee by reviewing the current PCO Rulebook and PCO Referee Handbook, which you can access here.

Getting Tested

Once you have reviewed the rules and the Referee Handbook, the next step is to take the tests. These can be done as many times as you wish.

The tests cover the Referee Rules, Best Practices, and Line Judge tests, which you can access here.

Certification Renewal

Referee certification is valid for three years from the date issued. You will be notified for certification renewal usually within 90 days of expiration.

The certification renewal process includes passing online tests, meeting a 20/30 visual acuity requirement using both eyes with or without corrective lenses and payment of a nominal fee. You will then receive a new photo ID badge.

Referee Clinics

Once you have reviewed the referee materials and taken the tests, you should plan on attending a referee clinic. Clinics are offered in various cities and towns in Alberta.

To request a clinic, contact your nearest affiliated pickleball club or the Director of Officiating at Pickleball Alberta.
